Ali Ryerson Jazz Flute Big Band: Game Changer
Una decina d'anni fa Ali Ryerson ha costituito una master class alla Hidden Valley Music di Carmen Valley, California, iniziando a commissionare partiture orchestrali per un ensemble di soli flauti. Nel 2005 l'orchestra si è formata e dopo vari concerti ha deciso d'entrare in sala d'incisione.
Il risultato è questo ed è delizioso: sedici flautisti insieme fanno un bell'effetto, che ricorda la fragranza della stagione West Coast. L'orchestra copre tutte le dinamiche di registro e può contare su solisti di primo piano come Hubert Laws = Hubert Laws, Jamie Baum, Holly Hofmann, Nestor Torres e della stessa Ali.
Le esecuzioni sono deliziosamente straight ahead e spaziano dal boppistico "Daahoud" di Clifford Brown all'afrocubano "Con Alma," da classici di Neal Nefti come "Lil'l Darlin'" e "Girl Talk" al lirico "Sail Away" di Tom Harrell. Difficile scegliere tra i brani, tutti seducenti. Io ho apprezzato molto il dinamico arrangiamento di Wofford in "Stolen Moments," col cantabile intervento di Hubert Laws, e la squisita eleganza di "Girl Talk," con Holly Hofmann in dialogo con Ali Ryerson.
