Joe McPhee - Ingebrigt Håker Flaten: Blue Chicago Blues
Il suo sax, inteso come naturale strumento-propaggine della voce e del pensiero dell'autore, ha sempre posseduto una pronuncia free esasperata, onestamente scontrosa; la sua musica, lirica e visionaria, non propone composizioni e arrangiamenti particolarmente elaborati; è il sound, concreto e variegato, a determinare gli sviluppi e le strutture narrative.
Tutto ciò viene confermato da questo CD, inciso nel dicembre 2007 a Chicago assieme al notevole contrabbassista Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, nato nel 1971 in Norvegia ma ora residente nel Texas. I sei brani, di media lunghezza, sono a firma congiunta e configurano situazioni improvvisative abbastanza circoscritte. "Truth in the Abstract Blues" si basa su una semplice scala discendente, ripetuta dal sax a mo' di riff insistito prima di inoltrarsi in sviluppi torrenziali, mentre il contrabbasso girovaga attorno a quella frase con elucubrazioni pertinenti.
Gli altri brani sono più movimentati e presentano una sequenza di evoluzioni visionarie, secondo un dialogo serrato in cui il contrabbassista ha modo di mettersi in evidenza con un incedere mobile, vivo, di grande ricchezza espressiva. Lo si può apprezzare in particolar modo nella parte centrale di "Cerulean Mood Swing" e nel solitario incipit di "Requiem for an Empty Heart". "Legend of the Three Blind Moose" ripropone un rilassato tema-riff che costituisce la serena conclusione del percorso improvvisativo.
Senza essere un CD imperdibile, Blue Chicago Blues ci presenta un duo che procede con immediata empatia, intessendo un'improvvisazione di denso, autentico spessore e di indubbia onestà culturale.
