Com'è accaduto a Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings anche Bettye LaVette ha incontrato il successo in età matura—o nel suo caso avanzata—ottenendo quei riconoscimenti che non ebbe negli anni d'oro della soul music. È stato l'album del 2003 A Woman Like Me, quando aveva già 57 anni, a darle quel successo che attendeva da tempo, aprendole un percorso ricco di soddisfazioni.

Con una scelta personale, Bettye non s'è collocata nel filone neo soul o degli Oldies but Goldies del repertorio Motown o Stax, ma ha preferito reinterpretare temi più o meno noti del rock e della popular music, ridisegnandoli con la sua marcata espressività.

Il suo precedente album del 2018 Things Have Changed era intermente dedicato al repertorio di Bob Dylan e, supportata da Keith Richards, Pino Palladino, Gil Goldstein, Steve Jordan e altri, ha fatto il pieno di premi. Nel nuovo lavoro si concentra su alcuni temi chiave del repertorio di cantanti afro-americane del passato come Nancy Wilson, Nina Simone, Dinah Washington o Billie Holiday più il brano dei Beatles che dà il titolo all'album: da anni Bettye l'ha inserito nel suo repertorio, leggendovi riferimenti al movimento dei diritti civili afroamericani degli anni sessanta.

Il piacere dell'ascolto viene innanzitutto dalle personali interpretazioni della cantante, il cui timbro polveroso mostra impennate drammatiche, suscitando qualche brivido all'ascoltatore. Il brano d'apertura "I Hold No Grudge," vecchio hit di Nina Simone, si pone come il manifesto espressivo del disco: lasciati i fondali con archi della versione originale il tema prende le forme di un lento rock blues con la chitarra elettrica di Smokey Hormel in evidenza.

I brani successivi sono affrontati tutti in lente interpretazioni colloquiali, che hanno però il limite di uniformare un po' troppo il percorso, nonostante le piacevoli soluzioni del chitarrista Smokey Hormel, del vibrafonista Monte Croft e di Leon Pendarvis alle tastiere. Tra i brani più vivaci ricordiamo "Blues of the Wheepers," che dona freschezza al lontano successo di Della Reese, e "Romance in the Dark" di Dinah Washington (la cui versione resta insuperata).
