Tra i tanti progetti portati avanti dal poliedrico chitarrista Bill Frisell, quello col quartetto 858 è sicuramente uno dei più interessanti. Nato nel 2005 per l'incisione di un CD di composizioni ispirate a 8 dipinti astratti del pittore d'avanguardia Gerhard Richter, il gruppo ha successivamente proseguito la propria attività in ambito live, fino ad arrivare al tour che in questi giorni li ha portati anche in Italia. Rispetto alla formazione originaria, la violinista Jenny Scheinman è stata sostituita dal trombettista Ron Miles, mentre accanto a Frisell sono rimasti due collaboratori consolidati come Hank Roberts al violoncello e Eyvind Kang alla viola.

Il cambiamento strumentale, pur senza stravolgere la musica del quartetto, ne ha però alterato la timbrica, spostandola verso ambiti più jazzistici. Nel corso del concerto abbiamo ritrovato un sunto efficace della poetica friselliana, rielaborata e rinnovata dai quattro musicisti. Il chitarrista si tiene spesso sullo sfondo, fornendo con la sua chitarra filtrata dall'elettronica (con uso di loop) la tela su cui i compagni, interagendo senza sovrastarsi, dipingono i loro interventi.

Jazz, blues, country, world, elettronica; tutte le esperienze musicali più o meno recenti realizzate da Frisell confluiscono in questo contenitore, che le restituisce dopo aver fornito loro nuovo smalto. La formula strumentale adottata non è legata a un genere in particolare, pertanto li può affrontare tutti senza esserne sottomessa; anche i temi country, che hanno suscitato in passato le critiche più accese al chitarrista, ne escono ripuliti e rinnovati.

La musica vive dell'interazione continua tra i quattro musicisti, lasciando poco spazio all'improvvisazione, a favore di una struttura complessiva predefinita che riesce tuttavia a mantenersi fluida e cangiante. La suddivisione in brani diventa secondaria rispetto al flusso continuo della composizione, che scorre come un lungo medley. Applausi convinti e meritati, alla fine, per uno degli artisti più originali e innovativi degli ultimi trent'anni.
