BANN: As You Like

Il gruppo BANN mette a confronto due generazioni di musicisti e lo fa con risultati interessanti ben dimostrati da questo primo album, pubblicato dalla etichetta siciliana Jazz Eyes.

I nomi sono di assoluto valore, dal saxofonista anglo-canadese Seamus Blake, al chitarrista israeliano Oz Noy, ai due veterani Jay Anderson e Adam Nussbaum, rispettivamente bassista canadese e batterista newyorkese. Certamente una delle sezioni ritmiche più affiatate della piazza.

Il problema sarà semmai tenere assieme quattro musicisti che hanno certamente un carnet ricco di impegni e di progetti musicali concomitanti. Non è un caso che nel CD compaiono gli indirizzi dei loro quattro siti individuali, mentre non compare alcun indirizzo per un sito BANN che evidentemente non esiste.

Il repertorio propone alcuni standard presi in maniera piuttosto innovativa, una canzone dolcissima come "Guinnevere" di David Crosby e Graham Nash (Miles Davis l'aveva già plasmata e reinterpretata in una versione molto dilatata, nel lontano gennaio del 1970) e alcuni brani originali scritti singolarmente da Oz Noy, Adam Nussbaum e Jay Anderson. A chiudere il tutto un brano a firma collettiva.

Il sax tenore di Seamus Blake riesce sempre a guizzare fuori dal linguaggio hard bop di base con soluzioni moderne ed innovative, anche se forse certi spiragli coraggiosi, che avevano caratterizzato gli inizi della sua carriera, si sono un po' persi per strada. La chitarra di Oz Noy è fluida e tagliente, aggressiva ed espressiva, da seguire attentamente. Anderson e Nussbaum sono perfettamente centrati sul ritmo, capaci di spingere quando serve e di arrotondare la scansione quando gli scenari diventano più rarefatti.

I quattro musicisti suonano assieme per questo progetto da circa quattro anni e l'affiatamento fra di loro è certamente uno dei punti di forza di questo album. Forse un pizzico di cattiveria in più, una decisa rincorsa oltre il crinale, avrebbe potuto portare frutti ancora più succosi, ma non di meno questo As You Like è certamente un album carico di suggestioni e di promesse.

Vedremo in seguito se saranno mantenute.
