Fly: Year of the Snake
Questo è quello che accade, rispettivamente, nei cinque momenti intitolati "The Western Land" da un lato, e le rimanenti sette tracce dall'altro. Queste ultime risultano di volta in volta gradevolmente neopostboppistiche ("Salt And Pepper"), intensamente funk-jazz ("Benj"), finemente rapsodiche o minimal e con dinamiche hard sound come "Kingston," giocate sul contrasto ritmico-sonoro tra il sax di Turner da una parte e il contrabbasso di Grenadier e la batteria di Ballard dall'altra ("Festival Tunes" e "Brothersister"). Nel complesso, i brani di Years of the Snake hanno coerenza espressiva, non lasciano spazio a inutili manierismi e sono ottimamente suonati.
Nonostante in Year of the Snake si rintraccino evidenti i riferimenti alla storia del jazz (da Freedom Suite di Sonny Rollins a Triplicate di Dave Holland), esso ha una spiccata personalità sonora e una forte propensione a reggere in maniera originale il paragone con altri importanti dischi in trio con sassofono del jazz moderno.
