Dimitri Grechi Espinoza - Tito Mangialajo Rantzer: When We Forgot the Melody

Quaranta minuti di musica completamente improvvisata, sviluppata da due musicisti aperti e coraggiosi come Espinoza e Mangialajo Rantzer, che oltre tutto si conoscono assai bene e possono far valere la loro intesa: già queste premesse basterebbero a rendere appetitoso questo ennesimo interessante lavoro della Rudi Records. Ma se ci aggiungiamo che - come indica il titolo - l'improvvisazione ruota attorno alla melodia - cioè qualcosa che i due, nei loro lavori abituali, non pongono al centro delle rispettive ricerche - e, per giunta, che il tutto ha per numi ispiratori nientemeno che Lee Konitz e Red Mitchell, ecco che all'ascolto di questo When We Forgot The Melody ci si avvicina con una certa emozione.

E l'ascolto, di fatto, non delude le attese: nove tracce medio-brevi, fortemente dialogate e presentate nei titoli come mere occasioni progressive, che esplorano situazioni melodiche anche molto diverse, sempre però facendo leva su ritmo e timbro. E se Mangialajo mostra un suono profondo e corposo che può richiamare certo Mitchell, ma anche altri maestri del contrabbasso (nella terza traccia, ritmicamente incalzante, Peacock; nell'ottava, un blues ipnotico, Mingus), per Espinoza in alcuni casi il riferimento a Konitz è strettissimo: la quarta e la sesta traccia ce ne offrono esempi lampanti, con variazioni timbriche e armoniche che omaggiano la lezione del Maestro chicagoano e la aggiornano.

Ma altrove il riferimento ai Maestri è maggiormente implicito e si dipana attraverso altri stilemi e atmosfere diverse, che talvolta - come nella citata ottava traccia - si riavvicinano alla New Thing e agli anni Settanta, attingendo a quella ricerca che i due portano avanti, separatamente o assieme, in altri progetti - ad esempio nel quartetto di Paolo Botti (clicca qui per leggere la recensione di Slight Imperfection). Svelando così in che modo anche Konitz e Mitchell facciano parte dell'apparato radicale di quella musica.
