Lee Konitz & Giovanni Ceccarelli French Trio: Waxin’ in Camerino

Rasentava le ottantadue primavere, al tempo di questo live marchigiano (aprile 2009), il grande Lee, eppure, ancora una volta, suonava divinamente. La sua voce di sax alto rimane una delle più fortemente identitarie del jazz moderno, anche per quel progredire allusivo e sornione, quasi sopra - più che dentro - la musica. La conferma ci arriva prontamente da una situazione neanche particolarmente meditata come può essere questa, peraltro in abbinamento con un ottimo trio, affiatato e non routiniero.

I temi prescelti sono tutti celebri standard, se si esclude la titletrack, di Konitz e Ceccarelli, fra l'altro tra i momenti migliori di un album già per suo conto di livello univocamente piuttosto alto. È subito l'iniziale "On Green Dolphin Street" a farci capire che tira una buona aria, in particolare attraverso un'impeccabile chase alto/piano, laddove, in "I Can't Get Started," è l'interludio per alto solo a far drizzare le antenne.

Si procede così sino alla fine, con punte particolari - si direbbe - in "Lover Come Back to Me," molto fresco, "Polka Dots and Moonbeams," gran bel clima e classe cristallina, e nel conclusivo "Invitation," aperto ancora dai soli Konitz e Ceccarelli e per il resto gestito con estrema sapienza nell'articolare, nello strutturare - sia pur prevedibilmente all'impronta - la molta carne al fuoco, tanto da non risentire dell'ampia durata (oltre un quarto d'ora), anzi persino avvantaggiandosene.
