Wayne Shorter
L'evento di qualche settimana fa è la pubblicazione di Without a Net, disco (live) del quartetto di Shorter (Danilo Pérez, John Patitucci, Brian Blade) che ritorna alla Blue Note ed è destinato a vincere tutti i premi possibili dell'anno, tanto è bello.
Il percorso musicale raccoglie principalmente brani dal tour europeo del 2011 e inizia con una vibrante versione di "Orbits" (ricordate? Era in Miles Smiles). Uno dei momenti centrali è la lunga (23 minuti) e avventurosa versione di "Pegasus" ma tutto il disco è un trionfo. Correte ad aquistarlo.
E qualcuno non ci venga a dire che il jazz è morto e si regge sulle spalle dei vecchi leoni (il prossimo agosto Shorter compie ottant'anni) perchè sia la generazione di mezzo che gli emergenti non sono da meno.
Rob Mazurek
Nelle scorse settimane è stato pubblicato dalla Cuneiform Skull Session del nuovo ottetto di Rob Mazurek. Il visionario cornettista di Chicago ha riunito componenti dell'Exploding Star Orchestra (la flautista Nicole Mitchell, il vibrafonista Jason Adasiewicz e il batterista John Herndon) e del São Paulo Underground (il percussionista Mauricio Takara e il tastierista Guilherme Granado) con nuovi partner come il chitarrista Carlos Issa e il sassofonista Thomas Rohrer . Ne risulta una musica ancora una volta avventurosa, post davisiana nella sua essenza.
Ches Smith
Scendiamo di una generazione e dopo il quasi cinquantenne Mazurek passiamo ad uno degli emergenti più interessanti: il batterista e leader Ches Smith attualmente in tour con Mary Halvorson e già ascoltato con Tim Berne, Marc Ribot, Ben Goldberg, Darius Jones. S'è fatto apprezzare col quintetto These Arches (Tim Berne, Tony Malaby, Mary Halvorson e Andrea Parkins) che ha appena pubblicato il secondo disco per la Clean Feed Hammered.
Vediamoli in questo video ripreso all'ultimo Saalfelden Jazz Festival.
Ma non è finita. Il batterista ha formato un nuovo trio con trombettista Jonathan Finlayson e il contrabbassista Stephan Crump che ha debuttato il 10 ottobre scorso al The Stone di NYC. Questo è un estratto della serata e non servono altri commenti.
