Kenny Barron: The Source
Un pianista dell'immensa classe come Kenny Barron non si accontenta di riproporre alcuni dei più fulgidi capolavori di Duke Ellington e Billy Strayhorn. Il suo obiettivo consiste nel rimodulare le strutture profonde del tessuto armonico-melodico attraverso un linguaggio pianistico aggiornato, ribollente di estroversa vitalità. Agendo come l'occhio umano quando trattiene nella memoria uno spettro diverso dei colori rispetto a un quadro ammirato in un museo, così l'ottantenne pianista di Filadelfia apporta una nuova linfa cromatica al repertorio rivisitato senza tralasciare il senso dello swing e la sua squisita musicalità.
La forza dell'improvvisazione è l'altro valore aggiunto di questo concerto del 2022 al Théâtre de l'Athénée Louis-Jouvet di Parigi. C'è gioia ed entusiasmo in questa esibizione live di un unsung hero, che il grande pubblico del jazz e le case discografiche non hanno saputo valorizzare adeguatamente. Nelle nove tracce del cd brilla un approccio pianistico diacronico e insieme sincronico, per far cogliere all'ascoltatore le innumerevoli risonanze interne che accomunano i vari stili del jazz.
Un esempio per quanti ritengono ormai superate le radici profonde della musica afromericana in favore di ciò che è solo nuovo e contemporaneo.
