The Private Collection documenta due concerti hadeniani tenuti nel 1987 e 1988, ora tirati fuori dall’archivio privato del contrabbassista per la realizzazione di questo doppio CD, consigliabile ai fan più fedeli del Quartet West.

Una macchina di suono perfettamente oleata, in cui niente è fuori posto per via di dinamiche e processi d’insieme ottimizzati nel corso di un ventennio di carriera concertistica e discografica. Troviamo, insomma, un piacevole percorso post-boppistico, proposto con indubbia classe e maestria ma senza il fuoco sacro che contraddistingue il versante più avanguardistico ed interessante della musa hadeniana.

È un melange ben costruito, con composizioni di Charlie Parker, Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis e via dicendo. A questo si aggiunga un parter de roi d’eccezione, grazie alla presenza di due batteristi straordinari come lo scomparso Billy Higgins e Paul Motian. Eppure a dispetto del contesto live e della presenza di un pubblico empatico e partecipativo, non è si accesa la scintilla di una vis creativa che solo l’attimo fuggente di un’esibizione jazzistica può regalare.
