Ted Nash: The Mancini Project
Vi prevale, infatti, un eccessiva cura per lo sviluppo orizzontale della dimensione melodica, in cui il rispetto della forma prende fastidiosamente il sopravvento sulla vis improvvisativa che sarebbe lecito aspettarsi da jazzisti di tal levatura. I quattro prediligono invece le soluzioni smorzate ed eleganti, agendo come musicisti pop, il cui unico obiettivo è quello di suonare bene sul canone dato, senza la minima voglia di destrutturarlo alle radici.
Sia nella più classica formula del quartetto che nel duo sax-pianoforte ed ancora nel trio senza batteria, gli esiti jazzistici risultano piuttosto modesti. Un disco impeccabile sul piano della condotta strumentale ma esangue e privo di nerbo, riscattato solo in parte dalla pronuncia incisiva del sax del leader e poco più.
