Jure Pukl: The Long Run. Live Takes

Il giovane sassofonista sloveno Jure Pukl presenta in questa registrazione alcuni brani dal vivo alla testa di varie formazioni. Si tratta di tre improvvisazioni in trio con il batterista Howard Curtis e il percussionista Günther Meinhart, intervallate da due brani in quartetto con tromba senza pianoforte e dalla lunga "Fly!," in un quartetto classico con pianoforte. Le situazioni sono tutto sommato abbastanza diverse, ma accomunate da una cifra di jazz moderno molto libero ma espressivamente ben identificabile: non è un caso che il libretto comprenda una lunga introduzione di Dave Liebman, che senza dubbio costituisce uno dei riferimenti tanto del genere di musica proposto, quanto delle forme espressive messe in gioco da Pukl.

Il sassofonista si esprime in modo particolarmente efficace al tenore, dove impiega stilemi ora lirici ("Sava Pharaoh?"), ora esuberanti postcoltraneani ("Part IV"), ora soffiati e soffusi ("Part VI"), ma è apprezzabile anche al soprano ("Fly!," ove la prossimità con Liebman si fa tangibile) e al flauto di legno ("Part II"). E l'interazione istantanea con soli percussionisti si rivela un contesto nel quale si trova perfettamente a proprio agio, producendo una musica stimolante e priva di cali di tensione.

Ma anche come compositore Pukl si mostra degno di attenzione, perché le altre tre tracce, a proprio nome, sono belle strutture aperte - non a caso si prolungano oltre i dieci minuti - costruite attorno ad apprezzabili intuizioni melodiche.

Interessante il gruppo di musicisti che accompagnano Pukl nelle diverse situazioni, prova della vitalità di un'area - quella sloveno-austriaca - che meriterebbe osservare con maggiore attenzione.
