Piers Lawrence Quartet: Stolen Moments

Troppo spesso, quando ci si avvicina ad un disco chitarristico ci si ritrova ad ascoltare virtuosismi, passaggi veloci e - se si tratta di un disco mainstream - la rievocazione di una tradizione che fa capo a chitarristi come Barney Kessel o Tal Farlow. Diciamo subito che per Piers Lawrence è vero l'opposto: un chitarrista dal suono fra Wes Montgomery e Joe Pass che usa il suo strumento in modo che verrebbe da definire minimalista, con le note giuste al posto giusto, con molta comunicatività così da rendere l'ascolto sempre piacevole.

Fra i brani eseguiti c'è anche "Donna Lee" di Charlie Parker, senza la nevrosi dell'era in cui Bird e Dizzy si trovarono ad agire, quasi uno smooth-bop, se ci è consentito il termine. E poi ci sono i suoi sideman che funzionano alla perfezione e rendono il disco perfettamente bilanciato in ogni sua parte, senza squlibri esecutivi, tutti al servizio del progetto del leader.

Dischi del genere aiutano a fare avvicinare al jazz il grosso pubblico, o a fare restare nel club il pubblico fino a tarda ora. Gradevoli, rilassanti, riusciti nell'impresa di mettere insieme un pò d'arte ed il gusto del pubblico.
