Cyrus Chestnut: Spirit
Chestnut percorre un repertorio che combina classici del gospel a scelte molto originali, fra le quali segnaliamo Bridge Over Troubled Water di Simon e Garfunkel e Come Sunday di Ellintgon. Il Duca porta con se altre scelte inattese quanto logiche all'ascolto: Peace di Horace Silver e All by All di Chris Potter.
Oltre al sottotesto spirituale, l'elemento che unifica "Spirit" è l'interpretazione di Chestnut, che possiede i tratti migliori dei grandi solisti jazz. Il suo approccio alle melodie ha qualcosa di Armstrong, nella straordinaria capacità di rispettarle, anzi esaltarle, pur immettendo nell'esecuzione tutta la propria individualità. Un'arte della variazione quasi dimenticata, qui unita a un ricco trattamento armonico e a quella capacità estatica di produrre swing che da sempre è il tratto più riconoscibile di Chestnut.
