Ingrid Laubrock: Sleepthief
Da un lato, dunque, l'improvvisazione radicale europea come alveo all'interno del quale scorre l'ora abbondante di musica in scaletta; dall'altro una sofficità di fondo, una sensualità sottotraccia, che rimanda in maniera indiretta a quel meraviglioso organismo che a metà anni Quaranta fu il trio Cole/Young/Rich.
Sia chiaro, non che in scaletta ci siano ballad o standard: d'improvvisazione in senso stretto si sta parlando e il marchio Intakt la dice lunga sull'estetica-filosofia della quale Sleepthief è figlio. Ma di certo la musicalità gioca un ruolo importante nel complessivo dipanarsi delle idee. Come nell'iniziale "Zugunruhe," tutta giocata su esitazioni e sobbalzi; oppure nella title track, che si apre con un delizioso e carezzevole gioco di pelli da parte di Rainey, sul quale s'innestano il sax lamentoso della Laubrock e gli arpeggi cristallini del piano di Liam Noble; e ancora in "Never Were Not," senza dubbio l'apice dell'intero disco, con il suo avvio trasognato, l'implacabile crescendo dettato dalla mano sinistra di Noble e quell'entusiasmante marcetta finale che lascia tanto perplessi quanto estasiati; o infine "Environmental Stud," ornettiana per i primi trenta secondi, evanparkeriana per i restanti sei minuti e mezzo.
Insomma, un'ispirazione che sgorga cristallina, un appagante gioco d'incastri e nessun cedimento al prevedibile, fanno di Sleepthief un disco assai prezioso.
