Manu Katche: Playground
Non è facile realizzare un album che sia classico, in senso jazzistico, non banale e capace di uscire dallo stereotipo del filone in cui si inserisce. Playground del batterista francese Manu Katche riesce ad essere queste tre cose insieme.

Lungamente al fianco di Peter Gabriel, Sting, Youssou n’Dour e Jan Garbarek, Katche aveva già convinto con la sua prima prova da solista, Neighbourhood. Playground continua laddove il discorso era rimasto in sospeso. Mantenuti saldi il contrabbasso di Kurkiewicz e il piano di Wasilewski, il nuovo progetto si allarga ai fiati di Mathias Eick (tromba) e Trygve Seim (sassofoni), escludendo dunque, coraggiosamente, due grandi quali Stanko e Garbarek.

Il nuovo quintetto, che solo in due track è affiancato dal chitarrista David Torn, sprizza energia. La linea melodica è costantemente sotto controllo, precisa, limpida. Prova significativa, senza sbavature e con quel tocco di libertà in più che fa pensare ad una completa emancipazione dai vecchi maestri!

Patinato, soft e leggero. Senza che nessuno di questi tre aggettivi sia ingiusto o un’offesa.
