Barry Guy - Marilyn Crispell - Paul Lytton: Phases of the Night

Phases of the Night potrebbe essere definito un viaggio attraverso il suono, attraverso la sua grana cristallina-densa-impura e la sua dinamica con cambi di direzione improvvisi: da aggrovigliata a sospesa, da frammentaria a concatenata, da riflessiva a tellurica... È appunto dalla concezione del sound, nella sua gamma espressiva più ampia, che sembrano prendere forma le strutture dei brani, tutti scritti da Barry Guy. A metà e nelle battute finali del lungo e tortuoso brano d'apertura emerge un tema ribattuto che può sembrare un "Blue Rondo a la Turk" di Brubeck reso informale e materico. "The Invisible Being Embraced" inizia con toni delicati e sospesi, quasi impressionistici, per poi deviare repentinamente in un magma martellante; nel finale il ritorno a cadenze ritmiche più rilassate è nel segno di uno sconforto un po' cupo.

La musica si snoda come un'invenzione a tre voci, anche se, come ho già detto, i percorsi sono dettati dalla penna del contrabbassista. La voce più in evidenza è quella della pianista: è lei che, per presenza sonora, per piglio, per sviluppi melodici, ma anche per il ruolo che evidentemente lo stesso compositore le ha assegnato, sembra determinare l'evoluzione delle dinamiche.

Salvo alcuni incipit o intermezzi in solo, insinuanti e stralunati, il contrabbasso di Guy è onnipresente alle spalle della pianista, producendo per lo più un bordone scuro e ossessivo.

Lytton inserisce i suoi interventi percussivi sempre con compassato distacco, anche nei momenti di maggiore tensione: il suo tocco, attento ai valori timbrici, risulta sordo e nodoso sulle pelli, per divenire sui piatti uno spolverìo metallico, oppure un aggricciante sfregamento.
