Giovanni Maier: Pages

Giovanni Maier non è nuovo alle registrazioni in solitudine, ne ha anzi al suo attivo numerose, ma - come ci diceva in una recente intervista - l'esercizio sul proprio strumento costituisce per lui uno dei momenti più importanti dell'attività di musicista e per questo continua a testimoniarne l'esperienza sulla sua etichetta documentaria, la Palomar.

Ecco così queste "pagine" per solo contrabbasso, ben ventisette divise su due CD. In larga misura composizioni originali, tra le quali spiccano gli omaggi a quattro grandi figure (Jerry Garcia, Bill Dixon, Warne Marsh, Fred Hopkins), accanto ad alcuni brani già registrati in formazioni più ampie ("Cipperi," "Due cellule"). Tra le composizioni non originali è significativa la presenza di due tra i più classici standard e gli omaggi a due dei musicisti più amati dal contrabbassista, Monk e Ornette.

Il lavoro, due ore e venti minuti di musica sofisticata e meditativa, non si lascia facilmente riassumere, dato che i suoi aspetti più rilevanti si celano nei dettagli con cui ciascuna composizione viene eseguita e interpretata da Maier. Il quale, tuttavia, mette ogni abilità e ogni tecnicismo al più completo servizio del racconto di volta in volta sviluppato, rimanendo in tal modo sempre pienamente e piacevolmente fruibile.
