Dooom Orchestra: Our Sea Lies Within II

La Dooom Orchestra di Francesco Cigana pubblica un secondo volume con il materiale emerso dalla session del luglio 2023. Del collettivo padovano d'avanguardia abbiamo già parlato recensendo il primo volume Our Sea Lies Within e rimandiamo a quel testo i lettori.

Anche in quest'album abbiamo otto brani dove la libera improvvisazione la fa da padrone, insistendo sulla ricerca timbrica e la creazione di paesaggi sonori originali. Anche se non mancano episodi d'astratto camerismo o aleatori, la variopinta presenza percussiva è centrale. Francesco Cigana lavora con quest'ensemble da sei anni usando la libera improvvisazione come metodo compositivo, senza precisi riferimenti stilistici e non ripercorre i modelli del free jazz.

È però vero che qualche riferimento a quella stagione non manca e nel brano "Ewhptiv" il pianoforte di Andrea Zerbetto improvvisa liberamente su una serie di note che pian piano assumono la melodia di "Ghosts," il noto brano di Albert Ayler, fino all'esplosione del collettivo sul tema.

La selezione musicale inizia con "Sicapoo" un brano costruito su una base iterativa dai connotati etnici su cui improvvisa con veemenza Francesco Salmaso al sax tenore. Ogni episodio ha una sua particolare identità: suggestiva per chi è avvezzo ai percorsi della libera improvvisazione, un po' meno per gli altri.

Siamo sul terreno dell'Opera aperta dunque: composizioni istantanee, tanto libere nella struttura quanto attente alla calibratura delle dinamiche e agli accostamenti timbrici e ritmici. Personalmente abbiamo apprezzato gli accostamenti elettroacustici, i tumultuosi fondali iterativi, gli innesti della chitarra elettrica. Restano impressi l'avventuroso "East River Prayer" e il magnetico "Jade Monkey Temple."
