Inciso a Colonia nel dicembre 2017, questo album vede il quarantenne pianista austriaco Philip Zoubek, collaboratore fra gli altri di Paul Lytton, Frank Gratkowski, Ernst Glerum ed Herb Robertson, misurarsi con la prediletta formula del trio, nello specifico affiancato dal bassista tedesco David Helm e dal batterista elvetico Dominik Mahnig.

Come principali punti di riferimento, Zoubek abbina Lennie Tristano e Paul Bley a Glenn Gould, John Cage, Iannis Xenakis e Morton Feldman, il che ci fa capire come la sua formazione si abbeveri ugualmente al jazz più curioso e innovativo come al Novecento cosiddetto "colto."

Tutto ciò si riverbera nei dieci brani che compongono questo Outside, indistintamente a firma del pianista, per quanto scrollarsi di dosso tutta la pesante tradizione, la letteratura, che una formula trafficata come il piano trio si porta appresso sia impresa da far tremare i polsi a chiunque. Qui la volontà di battere itinerari personali è in ogni caso largamente avvertibile, con risultati anche egregi.

Gli episodi in cui tale intenzione si coglie in maniera più nitida sono a conti fatti quelli più irregolari, tipo il breve ”Now Then”, dall'incedere nervoso, ”Spaces in Between”, astratto e libero, e ”Gambit”, peraltro all'interno di un corpus complessivo di valore comunque omogeneo e felicemente equilibrato nelle sue varie componenti.
