Z - Star: Masochists & Martyrs
Lei apporta i colori soul, R&B, rock, lievemente ambrati di jazz. Parte lentamente con l'arpeggio dai profumi nostalgici e autunnali di "Tree Of Life". Accelera lievemente con una ballad stile Tracy Chapman ("Shiver"): la voce è rotonda, potente e si innervosisce con trasporto al momento giusto nella sezione B. "Tension" è puro sound anni '80: un déjà vu dignitoso. Si prosegue con "Trouble Woman": arrangiamenti eleganti, vocalità sporcata di blues.
Si cambia scenario: "Venus Blues" è un reggae senza grandi sussulti. "No Love Lost" è un roteante e festante 6/8. L'andamento rock, il riff distorto, l'assolo straziato di "Sci-ko Bitch" sembrano preludere a qualcosa di importante: ma niente, dopo un minuto si spegne tutto e si capisce che lo strumentale fa da antipasto a un nuovo cambio di direzione: "God Is Love" si esplica nei paraggi di cose alla Led Zeppelin, per intenderci.
È il momento più intenso del disco. Lo completa l'apparente sonnolenza di "Evergreen". Qui la voce di Z Star è al meglio delle sue possibilità e trova l'humus stilistico più congeniale alle sue doti vocali. Fosse tutto così questo suo secondo lavoro sarebbe un capolavoro.
