Michael Marcus: Lotus Symphony

Dagli inizi al sax baritono in gruppi di rhythm n' blues all'esperienza con Jaky Byard, di tempo ne è passato, ma Michael Marcus continua ancora a sorprederci. Cambia strumento (in questo disco si dedica solo al clarinetto), ma la sua statura artistica resta invariata, con un ampia possibilità espressiva che prende a prestito da tutta la storia del jazz.

Il brano d'apertura del disco "As Always, Our Blessings" è un esempio di jazz coltraniano, mistico, poetico, ma anche insolito per lo strumento adottato. Il resto dell'album lo vede impegnato in trio con la ritmica, in duo con Jay Rosen ed in un quartetto in cui l'altro fiato è il sax tenore Antoine Roney. Dopo tanti dischi (molti per la Soul Note) intensi e bluesy in cui lo trovavamo protagonista al sassofno ora è la volta del clarinetto, padroneggiato su tutta l'estensione con voce personale e poetica, accattivante per come riesce a trascendere il lato tecnico della musica per tirarne invece fuori il lato più comunicativo. Non ci sono maestri, anzi, è lui ora il maestro allo strumento, autore pure di pregevoli composizioni che rendono l'album un'esperienza di ascolto che va al di là dei generi. Per questa volta ha superato i momenti free e non ci sono dubbi che ci ritornerà. Per ora godiamoci questo suo disco di grande mainstream.
