Francois Carrier - Michel Lambert: Kathmandu

Kathmandu è il resoconto di una settimana di incontri, di amicizie, di sorprese, di colori, di profumi, e, naturalmente, di suoni che il sassofonista Francois Carrier e il batterista Michel Lambert hanno avuto modo di registrare nella capitale nepalese durante la quinta edizione del Jazzmandu Festival.

Tra i principali esponenti della scena improvvisativa canadese, i due musicisti e amici di lunga data, scelgono la strada di undici improvvisazioni di medio-breve durata, proprio per esprimere il grande ventaglio di emozioni creato da quei luoghi sperduti e da un pubblico caloroso, privo di preconcetti nei confronti della libera improvvisazione.

Il risultato? Musica che fluisce seguendo le linee zigzaganti e indefinite del sax alto di Carrier ancorato a qualche raro appiglio melodico, facile a improvvise e onomatopeiche esplorazioni timbriche. Mentre le percussioni di Lambert vagano da un punto all’altro dello spazio sonoro, ora volatili ed etere, ora ruvide e magmatiche.

Ma l’ascoltatore, lontano dal momento-evento del concerto e dai canali di comunicazione che solo l’esibizione dal vivo è in grado di alimentare, si trova disorientato e fatica a trovare il senso più profondo e spirituale della musica contenuta in Kathmandu.
