If you like quartets, there's some great music from these foursomes: German & NYC drummer Joe Hertenstein with trombonist Ray Anderson, saxophonist Michael Moore & bassist Michael Formanek documented a European tour last year and set a high bar on The 7th Dinner Live. Also recorded live, French drummer Raphaël Pannier fulfilled a dream of playing with Senegalese "sabar" musicians when he and his quartet joined N'Diaye Rose's group at the Saint Louis International Jazz Festival. It's a percussion feast! Saxophonist Igor Lumpert did some catching up, when he formed a quartet to record music that was originally part of an earlier project called "Prayer For The Earth." Belgian drummer Gert Jan Dreesen's debut Angle Of Incidence gets a feature, and saxophonist Muriel Grossmann takes her quartet down a spiritual path drawn on the Dzogchen principle of non-meditation. Finally, Finnish trumpeter Mikko Pettinen & his band Why Not tell the tale of Mikko's journey through the ultra rare disease, superficial siderosis. You'll also hear the splendid trio of pianist John Taylor, bassist Marc Johnson & drummer Joey Baron on Tramonto, a newly unreleased 2002 album from ECM. This episode closes with a sincere memoriam to free jazz drummer, Abbey Rader who died in September.Playlist
