Josh Rosen – Stan Strickland: Instinct

Questo disco ha una duplice essenza, antitetica solo in apparenza: la fattura, inappuntabile, ma sull'altro piatto della bilancia una sostanziale inutilità. Vi alberga un senso di risaputo, di quieta e correttissima routine, di dialogo che ha anche episodi meritevoli ("Puffer Pond," "Slowdance," "Christmas Carol," "Lady Jaguar"), ma raramente in grado di coinvolgere, se non in epidermide, un po' distrattamente, come qualcosa che scorre accanto senza che ci si debba per questo fermare e occuparvi lo sguardo.

Lo attraversa un descrittivismo piuttosto marcato, educato se non edulcorato, più fluido allorché Strickland si dedica a sax soprano e flauto canonico, più introverso se sono i flauti più gravi o il clarone a occupare il centro del proscenio (abbastanza desolanti, per contro, i momenti in cui il Nostro opta per la voce).

Nel ruolo di interlocutore (o comprimario?), Rosen si muove con discrezione, apparentemente a proprio agio, pur rivendicando qua e là (per esempio in "Slowdance") responsabilità più pregnanti. Il dialogo rimane sia quel che sia sempre equilibrato, ben bilanciato, anche se - come detto - di regola non particolarmente emozionante.
