Joe McPhee – Matt Shipp – Dominic Duval: In Finland
Questo album documenta un concerto tenuto in Finlandia nel 2004. Il primo mai tenuto da questo trio, e speriamo che non sia anche l’ultimo (ma se diamo retta ai titoli dei brani, quello della traccia due - Never Again - purtroppo non lascia ben sperare).
L’ambito è quello abituale per Mc Phee, Duval e Shipp: l’improvvisazione libera, totale, che scaturisce nell’istante. Musica senza rete e senza “pilota automatico”. La concentrazione è sempre alta, l’interazione fitta. Vero interplay. E Dio sa quanto siamo riluttanti ad usare questa parola, usata ed abusata, ormai svuotata del suo vero significato. Ma in questo caso ci pare appropriata. E poi, ci mancano termini migliori.
I brani, molto lunghi, hanno il tempo e lo spazio per esplorare tutte le sfumature dello spettro emozionale. Ci sono fasi turbolente, passaggi magmatici. Erano attesi e - in qualche misura - prevedibili. Ci hanno dunque colpito di più i momenti più delicati, filigranati, fatti di dolci atmosfere e melodie. Fare (con successo) introspezione lirica improvvisando non è da tutti, ma questi sono musicisti speciali!
