Andrew Hadro: For Us, The Living
Ha atteso quasi un decennio, il sax baritono Andrew Hadro, per incidere il primo disco a suo nome. Dopo alcune collaborazioni minori, dal 2006 al 2008 è stato scritturato da Chico Hamilton -con cui ha pubblicato sei album -e negli anni successivi da Junior Mance e Tony Malaby. Nato a Città del Messico e cresciuto per qualche anno in Brasile è tornato con la sua famiglia negli Sati Uniti, stabilendosi prima a Chicago e poi a New York (dove s'è laureato alla New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music). Oggi è uno dei baritonisti emergenti sulla scena della Big Apple e questo debutto ne svela le doti.

Come spiega l'autore in copertina, il titolo del disco si riferisce al discorso che Abraham Lincoln tenne nel cimitero di Gettysburg il 19 novembre 1963, atto che rappresenta una pietra miliare nelle fondazione degli Stati Uniti, e di cui si celebrava il 150mo anno quando il disco è stato inciso.
Uno sguardo al passato che Hadro traduce in musica attraverso un percorso celebrativo che non ha nulla di esplicitamente nostalgico ma si snoda con lirismo e partecipazione attraverso dieci brani dalle tinte generalmente intime e crepuscolari. Tra i suoi partner il nome più noto è quello del batterista Matt Wilson, mentre sia la pianista Carmen Staaf (già con Wynton Marsalis ed Henry Grimes) che il bassista Daniel Foose (con Kenny Werner, David Binney, Nir Felder) sono giovani in rapida ascesa.

I primi due brani, "Allegrecia" e "Forever, All Ways" sono quasi un manifesto dell'intero disco. Due lente e radiose composizioni attente ai valori melodici, dove il sax baritono ha modo di sviluppare lunghi e ispirati interventi, alternando momenti d'intimo lirismo ad altri di maggiore estroversione.


Un disco significativo il cui unico limite è una qualche uniformità di percorsi e atmosfere: solo nell'ultimo brano, liberamente improvvisato tra il baritono e la batteria, si manifesta quel taglio contemporaneo, di cui avremmo gradito maggior presenza nel corso dell'album.
