Ahmad Jamal: Emerald City Nights: Live at the Penthouse, 1966-1968
Jamal, pianista stimatissimo da molti maestri del jazz fin dai suoi esordi, confermava in queste esibizioni di guardare obliquamente la storia del jazz moderno, dal bebop fino al modale, da una posizione del tutto originale, magari con un atteggiamento eclettico preso un po' da Erroll Garner, la cui lezione è estesa con nuove strategie, mantenute poi da Jamal fino a fine carriera.
Un primo assaggio della brillantezza di Jamal si ha con "Fantastic Vehicle," dove l'approccio di partenza è costantemente ribaltato con cambi di passo, schemi ritmici alternati, improvvise pause su ostinati accordali e rilanci swing di grande presa. Anche "Misty" sorprende per la nonchalance esecutiva, che al quinto minuto si blocca con un riff ripetuto ad libitum per mettere in vetrina il talento percussivo di Frank Gant.
Un pianismo umorale, sempre pronto ad interrogarsi su se stesso, lontano dunque da clichè scolastici, a suo modo d'avanguardia anche in un periodo segnato dall'atonalità di colleghi come Cecil Taylor o Andrew Hill, specie per la freschezza con la quale è reinventata la formula del trio, dove gioca un ruolo chiave il contrabbasso di Jamil Sulieman Nasser (splendido in "Mr. Lucky").
Il programma dei set del Penthouse gioca dunque sul fattore sorpresa che trasfigura pagine come "Autumn leaves" o "Corcovado" (vero tour de force di invenzioni) o visita temi meno noti, fino a versioni piuttosto tranquille della "Emily" di Johnny Mandel o della "Alfie" di Burt Bacharach. Comunque, qualsiasi sia il materiale di partenza, è la verve di Jamal ad imporsi, con uno stile che avrebbe influenzato diversi improvvisatori nel corso dei decenni.
