Ahmad Jamal: Emerald City Nights: Live at the Penthouse
Le tre sedute riunite in questo primo volume risalgono al giugno 1963 e alla primavera seguente e vedono il pianista di Pittsburgh, oggi novantaduenne, supportato (è proprio il caso di dirlo, vista la spiccata "pianocentricità" della sua filosofia estetica) da una ritmica che differisce nel bassista (Richard Evans e Jail Nasser, rispettivamente), mantenendo per contro le bacchette saldamente nelle mani di Chuck Lampkin. Si tratta, di fatto, di un'autentica summa del proverbiale Jamal-style, con tutta la sua brillantezza, il suo vitalismo, il suo virtuosismo, anche, le straordinarie doti strumentali, piene, rotonde, luminose, la facilità (e facondia) di eloquio, certe ridondanze, anche, peraltro largamente bilanciate dal piacere che l'ascolto che questa prima ora e mezza di jazz della più chiara acqua ci procura.
Tutto nella migliore tradizione jamaliana, in altre parole.
