Dave Liebman: Earth
Come alcuni ricorderanno al primo disco parteciparono Pat Metheny, Billy Hart e Cecil McBee; al secondo Walter Quintus e al terzo Kenny Werner, Dave Holland e Jack DeJohnette. Stavolta Liebman sviluppa la sua musica col suo quintetto Expansions in una prospettiva elettroacustica.
Come spiega lo stesso sassofonista sulle note, "Earth è costruito attraverso una selezione di intervalli che conferiscono una struttura più lineare al contenuto musicale." In concreto ognuna delle 14 composizioni si basa su specifici intervalli e sviluppa un'esplorazione musicale che privilegia l'aspetto timbrico (tanto quanto i precedenti lavori si concentravano su altri elementi musicali, come melodia e ritmo).
Il percorso musicale prevalente è un camerismo astratto in equilibrio tra classica contemporanea e post free ma non mancano momenti ritmicamente serrati, in un free elettrico che ricorda il Miles Davis radicale degli anni settanta. Tra i brani più lunghi e articolati si frappongono brevi interludi astratti con protagonista ognuno dei vari strumenti dell'ensemble.
Un'esplorazione della forma che ha i suoi punti di forza nelle fantasiose trame elettroacustiche sviluppate dal sax soprano del leader (sempre maestoso) assieme al wind synthesizer di Matt Vashlishan e alle tastiere di Bobby Avey. I momenti dove l'esplorazione è più intensa e ricca di umori sono il lungo e articolato "Sahara," l'astratto ed evocativo "Grand Canyon/Mt.Everest" e l'impetuoso "Galaxy," con gli strumenti solisti sorretti da un'accesa base percussiva.
