Marc Copland Quartet: Dreaming

Si pone per così dire al centro del guado questo quartetto del settantaseienne pianista di Filadelfia Marc Copland, qui (il quartetto) al suo secondo album dopo Someday (2022, stessa etichetta). Il guado è la centralità dell'idioma jazzistico proposto, in bilico (in equilibrio, forse più correttamente) fra rispetto per il déjà écouté, tratti originali e sete di ricerca. Qui, magari, le percentuali pendono più verso il primo aspetto che verso gli altri due, però tutto è condotto in porto con estremo buon gusto, pulizia, nettezza, diremmo quella che comunemente si definisce "onestà intellettuale."

Apre quelli che un tempo si chiamavano solchi uno dei capolavori monkiani, e la lettura al soprano di Robin Verheyen è assolutamente impeccabile, facendo persino venire in mente, qua e là (forse quasi fisiologicamente), Steve Lacy (vuole essere un complimento, a scanso di equivoci). La chiarezza di dizione, l'esplicitazione di ogni anfratto del brano, sono ammirevoli, secondo un procedimento che—come già detto—abbraccia poi tutto il resto del CD, in cui trovano posto due brani a testa del leader, del citato Verheyen (impegnato per lo più al tenore) e di Drew Gress, per chiudere con il classicissimo di Jerome Kern "Yesterdays."

Una bella lezione di jazz di mezzo, come dicevamo, che magari non ci schiuderà orizzonti insondati ma che si ascolta volentieri senza fare troppi sconti alla propria sete di scoperta (chi ce l'ha...). Il che non è dettaglio di poco conto.
