Towner Galaher: Courageous Hearts

Non possiamo non riconoscere che Courageous Hearts sia un buon disco di jazz. Perché il secondo album del percussionista Towner Galaher possiede tutti gli ingredienti per dar credito a questa affermazione. Un gruppo di ottimi musicisti, una manciata di solide composizioni ancorate al postbop, una spruzzata di latin tinge con l'immancabile "Afro Blue" di Mongo Santamaria tanto per gradire, la classica alternanza tra brani dal ritmo serrato e tempi lenti o medio lenti, la ancor più classica struttura tema-assolo-tema eseguita impeccabilmente, interventi solistici scoppiettanti, e il piatto è servito.

Solo che, se per gioco, provassimo ad eseguire un blindfold test sul materiale appena ascoltato potremmo elencare una serie infinita di musicisti tutti egualmente plausibili, data la carenza di tratti distintivi caratterizzanti e personali. Ed è proprio questo il limite della registrazione, una musica ben eseguita, nell'ortodossia del vocabolario jazzistico, valida per tutte le stagioni ma priva di un qualsivoglia elemento di originalità.

Gli amanti del jazz canonico venato di fusion potranno anche trovare qualche elemento di interesse (ma i Brecker Brothers hanno fatto decisamente meglio), chi cerca tracce di novità o una qualche sorpresa dietro l'angolo è mezzo avvisato...
