Dizzy Gillespie: Concert of the Century - Tribute to Charlie Parker
Il concerto è del novembre 1980 e trova questo sestetto di veterani del bop ancora abbastanza in forma, sia anagrafica che artistica, considerando il fatto che gli anni '80 non erano certo il periodo più favorevole per questo tipo di revival. L'operazione ricalca un po' quella dei Giants of Jazz di un decennio prima, pur non ottenendo i medesimi risultati creativi.
Titolo esagerato, dunque, per un omaggio a Charlie Parker che curiosamente evita i cavalli di battaglia di Bird anche se alcuni standards presenti non mancavano nel repertorio del sassofonista.
Il riff di "Blue 'n' Boogie" mette subito in evidenza il tenore di James Moody, molto più corposo del solito, forse l'unico a recepire con una certa grinta le acquisizioni strumentali del jazz post-bop, specie quelle di John Coltrane. Dizzy Gillespie sfoggia la consueta brillantezza in nonchalance, mentre stupisce una certa pesantezza di tocco di Philly Joe Jones. "If I Should Lose You" è una vetrina per Milt Jackson, che in ogni occasione riluce di una fantasia melodica superlativa.
Per il resto molta routine, specie nella medley che cuce un solo di basso di Ray Brown, la nota melodia di Luiz Bonfa e l'hit soul-jazz di Nat Adderley.
In generale, una buona session, non trascendentale.
