Jaco Pastorius: Back in Town

Jaco Pastorius vive. E lo fa attraverso le folte schiere di bassisti che si ispirano alla sua figura e tramite i molti musicisti che si sono appassionati alla sua musica, al suo inconfondibile stile. Back in Town documenta un concerto in trio del gennaio '78 al Players Club di Fort Lauderdale, in Florida, (città nel cui hinterland viveva, ad Oakland Park, e dove nove anni più tardi sarebbe stato ucciso dal buttafuori di un bar) nel quale il bassista è affiancato da due suoi vecchi amici di ventura, come Alex Darqui al pianoforte e Rich Franks alla batteria, in un momento di pausa dalla sua militanza con i Weather Report.

La registrazione ha una buona resa sonora, non eccezionale (si sente il vociare del pubblico soprattutto nei momenti dove i musicisti suonano a volumi più bassi) ma sufficente per poter apprezzare la scaletta proposta. Otto tracce, alcune delle quali sono medley di vari pezzi di Pastorius o presi in prestito da repertori prestigiosi (Herbie Hancock, Charlie Parker), per più di un'ora di musica nella quale si può apprezzare a pieno la tecnica e lo stile del leader, che si pone in maniera costante come vertice alto del triangolo espressivo.

In molti passaggi Pastorius cerca la via melodica in solo, come in "Portrait of Tracy/Okonkole y Trompa/Early Slang," e in altri si mette a disposizione del trio. Ne vie fuori una musica asciutta, a volte tesa e dal carattere forte, inclusa in un documento importante soprattutto per i molti amanti di Jaco, ma anche per i pochi che devono ancora mettersi sulle tracce del formidabile bassista.
