Ergo: As subtle as tomorrow

Ritengo la Cuneiform una delle migliori e intelligenti etichette musicali esistenti poiché, lavorando su territori spesso assai diversi fra loro, riesce regolarmente a evidenziare new forms e ricerche di spessore in molti lavori di artisti celebrati o meno. È il caso di questi Ergo (che hanno anche un sito che si chiama "ergo is a band"!), trio composto dal trombonista Brett Sroka (di lui si parla molto a New York anche per via delle ultime collaborazioni con Mary Halvorson e Sebastian Kruger e già titolare di un interessante esordio con Jason Moran, Avishai Cohen ed Eric Harland quali compagni di avventura), dal tastierista texano Sam Harris e dal dinamico percussionista Shawn Baltazor i quali, oltre ad un indubbio e mai nascosto profondo amore per le istanze jazzistiche, credono in una sorta di avanguardia "soffice" utilizzando con discreta plasticità le più creative strade proposte dall'elettronica contemporanea.

In gran parte evocativa (senza peraltro mai scendere nel pastorale o nel visionario), la scelta del trio è di una certa qual impercettibilità dove cioè l'evoluzione sonora approccia improvvisazione e figurazioni strutturate in maniera sicuramente personale. Un recensore sicuramente creativo di Terrascope riesce persino a spiegare il disegno quasi fosse un incontro fra Sigur Ros e Sun Ra!!

In totale affinità (citata) con le liriche di Emily Dickinson, il lavoro di Sroka e compagni è decisamente singolare e organicamente analitico rispetto agli elementi che ne costituiscono l'architettura. Placidamente elettro-acustico il risultato è emozionale e atipico. Nomi come Stockhausen, Xenakis, Riley o Aphex Twins non possono non balzare in mente anche ad un ascoltatore distratto. E tutto sembra avere una logica. Anche quando, dopo una mezz'oretta di ascolto arriva un quinto brano ("A Conviction") che sembra estratto a caso da un altro disco e che ti fa sobbalzare per l'immediata e inaspettata quanto discutibile vivacità ritmica. Ma, ripeto la frase precedente: tutto sembra avere una logica interna filante. E alla fine, vincono loro poiché convincono. Timbrica e spazialità del suono fanno il resto. Ma non è "ambient." E questo, forse, è il bello del gioco.
