Ted Chubb Band Trumpets Jazz Club Montclair, NJ June 21, 2018 The other night I went to Trumpets Jazz Club to check out the Ted Chubb Band without any preconceptions as to what I was about to hear. I was nonetheless interested in answers to some basic questions. Knowing nothing about ...

John Yao Quintet: Presence

Read "Presence" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

Shawn Baltazor: Lionsong

Read "Lionsong" reviewed by David A. Orthmann

It's difficult to resist the temptation to praise Shawn Baltazor's startling, diverse, incisive, multifaceted drumming at the expense of his equally impressive abilities as a composer and bandleader. Ergo: As subtle as tomorrow

Read "As subtle as tomorrow" reviewed by Vic Albani

Walking Distance: Neighborhood

Read "Neighborhood" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

If any group can turn the concept of ebb and flow into a fully realized art form, it's Walking Distance. This New York-based foursome thrives on architectural schemes connected to the expansion and contraction of musical materials, presenting sounds that can appear disjointed, yet demonstrating congruence in their expression(s) all the while. Different players push and ...

Shawn Baltazor Quartet:New York, NYSeptember 17, 2011 It's always night time at Smalls. Thirty minutes prior to a Saturday afternoon showcase of drummer Shawn Baltazor's Quartet, the basement club was a virtual world of its own, devoid of natural light and removed from the hustle and bustle of the West Village. Operating seven ...
