Ratatet: Arctic

Disco di esordio per Ratatet, sestetto di San Francisco diretto dal batterista Alan Hall, che presenta una musica semplice e swingante, di stampo cameristico ancorché qua e là screziata di elettronica, caratterizzata e resa personale dall'accuratezza degli arrangiamenti e -soprattutto -dalla particolare strumentazione dell'organico.

Le undici tracce, tutte relativamente brevi (solo tre arrivano ai cinque minuti) e sempre della penna di Hall, hanno infatti un andamento melodico-narrativo, non pedissequo ma tutto sommato orecchiabile e privo di spigolosità, immediato ma, allo stesso tempo, non particolarmente forte. A lasciare un segno, tuttavia, sono le sonorità con le quali la musica viene interpretata, basate principalmente sul trombone di John Gove , sul vibrafono di Dillon Vado e -soprattutto -sul fagotto di Paul Hanson -su uno strumento, cioè, assai raro da udire in ambito jazzistico e che perciò dona al lavoro un suono del tutto particolare.

Si aggiunga a questo che i tre strumenti indicati presentano anche forti e positivi contrasti timbrici che la gli arrangiamenti di Hall valorizzano pienamente, anche avvalendosi di un lavoro della ritmica anch'esso tutto sommato semplice, ma assai funzionale alla creazione di un ulteriore contrasto, che balza in primo piano in alcuni momenti in modo sorprendente (per esempio nella title track, dove le tastiere affrontano in crescendo gli assoli degli altri strumenti, o in "Gataxi," dove il basso elettrico svolge un ruolo simile assieme alla batteria), e si comprenderà perché questo lavoro possa quantomeno essere considerato a suo modo piuttosto originale.

Da segnalare la traccia conclusiva, "Returning," nella quale la presenza come ospite di Paul McCandless all'oboe e al corno inglese e quella di Joseph Hebert al vioncello donano alla musica un più complesso tono cameristico, anche se, tutto sommato, sottraendole originalità.
