Il nome di Zoot Sims non dirà molto ai giovani cultori di questa musica. Eppure è stato uno dei grandi sax tenore del jazz classico, tra gli ultimi anni quaranta e il decennio successivo.

Un improvvisatore fantasioso, che formò il suo stile sull'esempio di Lester Young e divenne noto quale componente dei "Four Brothers," la celebre sezione sax dell'orchestra di Woody Herman del 1947/49.

Tra i quattro era il più boppistico ed esuberante e negli ultimi anni di vita accentuò la sua vena lirica e una certa corposità websteriana.

Questo DVD risale al novembre 1984, quattro mesi prima della sua scomparsa non ancora sessantenne e ne mostra tutto il valore, nonostante il cancro con cui lottava. Il filmato è stato ripreso in Svezia, nel soggiorno-libreria della Sonet Records, l'etichetta per cui aveva registrato qualche anno prima The Sweetest Sound, con il chitarrista Rune Gustafsson.

Quest'ultimo è nuovamente con lui e, assieme al contrabbassista Red Mitchell, crea un clima ideale che gli consente di esprimersi al meglio.

Il DVD presenta anche una piacevolissima conversazione tra il sassofonista e Mitchell che rievoca momenti della sua storia musicale e ci accompagna da un brano all'altro. Zoot Sims appare debilitato nell'aspetto ma quando imbraccia il suo vecchio selmer la musica scorre fluida e serena, sorretto da quell'esemplare capacità di sintesi che aveva preso da Lester Young: uno stile cantabile, una voce suadente e un gusto per le sottigliezze che ne faceva un magistrale interprete di ballad.

Ed in questo filmato le ballad sono più d'una, a partire da "In a Sentimental Mood," che Zoot tratteggia in modo esemplare, per finire con "Autumn Leaves".

I suoi partner sono tanto discreti quanto efficaci sia nel sostegno ritmico che negli interventi solisti.
