Marco Eneidi Quintet: Wheat Fields of Kleylehof

To borrow a phrase once associated with Charlie Parker after his death: "Marco Eneidi lives!" Though less widely known in the mainstream jazz world, alto saxophonist Marco Eneidi (1956—2016) was a towering figure in free jazz and creative music. A West Coast native, he moved to New York in the 1980s and, following the passing of Jimmy Lyons, assumed the alto chair in Cecil Taylor's band. Taylor's rigorous methodology had a profound impact on Eneidi, as did the energy of the New York loft scene. Over the years he collaborated and recorded with William Parker, Glenn Spearman, Jackson Krall, Raphe Malik , Bill Dixon, Dennis Warren, Peter Brötzmann, Lisle Ellis and many others. While Taylor shaped his musical discipline, his saxophone voice often echoed the raw, searching spirit of West Coast innovators like Sonny Simmons and Ornette Coleman.

Eneidi's music remains painfully underdocumented, leaving much of his legacy to circulate through stories, memories, and rare recordings. That makes any newly unearthed material feel like a major discovery. Wheat Fields of Kleylehof is one such treasure—a co-production of Botticelli Records (founded by Eneidi and now run by his son) and bassist Damon Smith's Balance Point Acoustics. Smith had an extensive history with the altoist, having performed and recorded with him in the American Jungle Orchestra, as well as in smaller ensembles.

Recorded in 2004, the session features the Marco Eneidi Quintet: trumpeter Darren Johnston, guitarist John Finkbeiner, drummer Vijay Anderson and Damon Smith on bass. After a brief two-minute saxophone-and-drums joust titled "Prelude," the album unfolds into six composed "Parts." Eneidi's writing balances the quicksilver and the contemplative. His more energetic passages carry an undercurrent of orchestral tension, pushing each soloist forward. At the same time, the meditative sections are punctured by sudden, searing alto eruptions that remind listeners whose vision is steering the ensemble. "Part 2" begins with ghostly bowed bass and shimmering cymbals before Eneidi pierces the calm with plaintive, electrifying cries. Throughout, the quintet navigates his compositions with precision, sensitivity, and fire, delivering standout solos of their own.

Wheat Fields of Kleylehof stands as a miniature masterpiece—an essential document that deepens our understanding of Eneidi's artistry. For a musician whose brilliance long lived in the margins, this recording feels like a voice carried across time, affirming that Marco Eneidi not only lives but continues to inspire.
