Denise Donatelli: What Lies Within

Un disco brillante da parte di una cantante che conosce il proprio mestiere. Questo in sintesi il giudizio che si può dare di What Lies Within. Brava, abile a cantare standards e canzoni non proprio note, ma forse poco incisiva come leader: gli arrangiamenti sono del pianista Geoff Keezer e gli ospiti, come il sassofonista Bob Sheppard o il percussionista Alex Acuna svolgono un lavoro sì importante, ma che non contribusice tanto al suono collettivo della band.

Scorre tutto in modo perfetto, con assoli di alto livello che non mettono mai in discussione la bravura e la fama degli ospiti chiamati a partecipare. Solo che cosí facendo manca la dimensione collettiva e si avverte pure che gli arrangiamenti sono scritti piú per gli ospiti che la presunta leader.

Ma poco importa: il disco è gradevole, la voce non fa una piega, l´incisione di buon livello. E non si ricalcano le cantanti in voga del momento. In un paio di numeri la Donatelli sfodera tutta la classe che ha dentro, in altri lascia la palla agli interlocutori. Conosce bene il jazz e si sa amalgamare bene con gli ospiti e la band a disposizione, ma da qui a diventare una vera catalizzatrice di forze, occorre ancora un pò di lavoro.
