Bobby Sanabria: West Side Story Reimagined
Stranamente mancava un'interpretazione latina. Eppure una delle gang giovanili che si sfidavano nel musical era portoricana e le influenze latin che Bernstein usò nella versione originale venivano dalla profonda conoscenza del compositore di quella cultura musicale.
Leonard Bernstein era infatti un abituale frequentatore del Palladium Ballroom sulla 53ma strada di New York, dove s'esibivano Machito, Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez e altri maestri degli anni cinquanta.
West Side Story Reimagined di Bobby Sanabria ha quindi le carte in regola per entrare nella storia di quest'opera, a 60 anni di distanza dalla nascita e nel centenario della nascita di Bernstein stesso. Gli americani amano molto le celebrazioni e Sanabria ne aggiunge una personale, essendo nato nel 1957, come l'opera stessa.
La musica di questo doppio album è stata eseguita dal vivo il 19 novembre 2017 al Dizzy's Club Coca Cola con la Multiverse Big Band di Sanabria ma il progetto risale a due anni prima ed è stato eseguito con l'orchestra studentesca della Manhattan School of Music.
Gli arrangiamenti sono scritti in buona parte da Jeremy Fletcher—già collaboratore di Sanabria nel 2007— da strumentisti dell'orchestra come il sassofonista Danny Rivera o il trombettista Andrew Neesley e da orchestratori di lunga esperienza come Eugene Marlow che ha scritto la nuova versione di "Maria."
Inutile sottolineare l'opulenza di questa musica, che spazia con fantasia tra i molti generi dell'universo musicale latino: afrocuban jazz, rumba, cha cha cha, samba, merengue, joropo, cumbia eccetera.
Pur nell'accentuata caratterizzazione latina l'identità dell'opera non è affatto compromessa ma acquisisce nuove e smaglianti colorazioni.
