Ottavo volume del firmamento angelico zorniano, affidato al violoncello di Erik Friedlander, musicista che non solo conosce alla perfezione l'universo espressivo del compositore, ma che ha anche già evocato una serie di angeli con il Masada String Trio.

Con uno strumentista così versatile, l'intelligenza di Zorn sta nel valorizzarne la sensibilità espressiva, sia all'arco che nel pizzicato: i temi sono disegnati con severe volute come nell'iniziale "Harhazial", con felpate melodie ["Rachsiel" o la delicatissima "Yeruel"] o acidi strappi ["Zumel" o la quasi carlstallingiana "Ylrng"], con gesto quasi bachiano ["Sannul"] o di malinconico accanimento ["Kadal", "Sidriel"].

Il libro degli angeli è un discorso poetico in cui l'afflato mistico-esoterico non impedisce la continua rifinitura della scrittura e la bravura di Erik Friedlander sta nel mettere molto di sé in ogni brano, accendendo per ciascun angelo una luce particolare che consente di riconoscerlo tra la folla. Splendido.
