Precocemente scomparso nel 1990, il tenorista Frank Wright non ha potuto godere di quella - seppur relativa - rivalutazione che ha riguardato negli ultimi anni molti artisti free. Folgorato sulla via di Ayler dopo una anonima militanza come bassista in ambiti r&b, Wright è stato testimone vivo della new thing newyorkese e ha trovato nell'etichetta ESP il "luogo" in cui fare vivere quelli che sono ancora oggi tra i suoi dischi più rappresentativi, Frank Wright Trio e Your Prayer, incisi fra il 1965 e il 1967.

La seconda fase della sua carriera si è svolta - come è accaduto a molti altri - prevalentemente in Europa, incidendo a fianco di Cecil Taylor o Peter Brötzmann; a questa fase appartiene il concerto del 1 giugno 1974, al Festival di Moers, contenuto in Unity, pubblicato ora dalla nuovamente attiva ESP.

Con Wright sono Bobby Few al pianoforte, Alan Silva al contrabbasso e Muhammad Alì alla batteria, suoi compagni dall'arrivo in terra di Francia di qualche anno prima e con lui profeti di una musica torrenziale, mai doma, furente, sorretta in più di qualche parte più dall'energia che da una qualche strategia improvvisativa.

Suddiviso in due lunghe parti, ciascuna di poco inferiore alla mezzora, Unity si presenta come un documento fedele di quell'epoca, pregi e difetti compresi: complice anche la registrazione piuttosto artigianale, il disco è infatti un documento che incuriosirà gli appassionati, ma non è che sia proprio irresistibile.

Lo stesso Wright è solista piuttosto discontinuo, capace di abrasive accensioni, ma anche di qualche smarrimento, davvero poco convincente al soprano. Bobby Few condivide il duro destino di molti pianisti free, costretti a lotte titaniche con uno strumento che si rifiuta pertinacemente di piegarsi a quelle energie se non con grandi bordate di cluster e accordi. Qualcosa di più interessante viene da Alan Silva, che si concede anche un lungo soliloquio con l'archetto, ma la mancanza di un'idea di base un po' più evoluta del semplice "armiamoci e suoniam" lo trascina a volte in alcune ridondanze.

Resta l'energia, la tensione, l'esperienza [si intuisce ad esempio dal lungo solo di batteria alla fine della prima parte che chi c'era si è divertito assai], la musica di un "eroe" sottovalutato del free, cui va comunque il massimo rispetto. Per appassionati.
