Luis Rodrìguez: U-Turn

E' un compositore, Luis Rodrìguez, e tiene subito a precisarlo nelle note di copertina. E il percorso dei suoi sax non lascia spazio ai dubbi, già dal primo ascolto. Non ci sono eccessi in questo album d'esordio. Anzi, è un bel lavoro di scrittura musicale, a volte disegnato attorno a una linea eseguita all'unisono da piano, basso e sax, come nella traccia che dà il titolo al disco. O costruito su una precisa scelta di intervalli, come "Resolution", che lascia più spazio all'interplay con i suoi compagni: Luis Perdomo al pianoforte, Ramòn Vàzquez al contrabbasso e Efraim Martinez alla batteria.

Le sue qualità di autore e arrangiatore sono accompagnate dal suono caldo del suo tenore, e dalla leggerezza avvolgente del suo soprano, come in "Amistad Perfumada" (scaricabile, insieme con altri brani, nella sezione "Music" del suo sito). Il giovane sassofonista portoricano dà prova di un bel gusto anche nella scelta dei colori dei singoli brani. In alcune composizioni mette in mostra una vena funk e un amore profondo per il blues, che si mescolano insieme in "Broken Chains" dedicata a James Brown e al Movimento per i diritti civili.

In complesso un ascolto davvero piacevole per questo giovane talento cresciuto rapidamente nelle aule della Berklee, e che ha già avuto occasione di condividere il palco con giganti come Jerry Bergonzi e Giovanni Hidalgo.
