Matteo Bortone è un giovane contrabbassista originario di Otranto approdato a Parigi una manciata di anni fa e lì pienamente inseritosi nella sempre effervescente scena musicale locale. Dopo aver partecipato a diverse incisioni altrui (da segnalare Dark Flavour di Alessandro Lanzoni Trio e il notevole One Way ... or Another del Guilhem Flouzat Sextet) debutta, con Travelers, come leader e come compositore. Il quartetto è giovane ma di tutto rispetto con il citato Flouzat, avventuroso batterista, l'emergente sassofonista Antonin Tri Hoang e un chitarrista dalla forte personalità come Francesco Diodati.

Diciamo subito che Travelers è un disco interessante. Per il suono di gruppo che una combinazione non sempre ortodossa degli strumenti riesce a definire (la chitarra e i loops di Diodati, il sax e le emissioni talvolta alterate di Tri Hoang fanno da apripista in tal senso). Per la scrittura del leader, aperta agli umori contemporanei, a tratti piacevolmente schizofrenica, con continui cambi di metro, ma in fondo ancorata ad una sorta di classicità nella forma e nella presenza di una palpabile connotazione melodica.

Non tutti gli undici brani propongono la stessa intensità, lo stesso grado di sorpresa e perché no di arditi sviluppi improvvisativi (forse sarebbe chiedere troppo ad un opera prima e ad un gruppo dall'età media abbondantemente "under 30"). Ma bastano i quattro minuti di "Halfway" in cui sembrano mischiarsi i due Coleman (Steve e Ornette) o gli otto minuti abbondanti di "No Hay Camino," entusiasmante cavalcata scandita dallo walkin' bass del leader e portata a combustione dal contralto indemoniato di Tri Hoang, per farci apprezzare il giovane quartetto.
