Smell Quintet: Too Close For Comfort

Classica formazione con sassofono, ritmica e pianoforte affiancato dalla chitarra, lo Smell Quintet è composto da musicisti d’area bolognese, più Gianni Cazzola, batterista protagonista della storia del jazz italiano. Adatto dunque a fare da “chioccia” a musicisti perlopiù giovani e comunque impegnati su un repertorio che ripercorre le strade della tradizione, sebbene in larga parte con composizioni originali, in questo disco registrato per la sempre più impegnata etichetta friulana Artesuono.

La tradizione la si sente nel contrabbasso dell’ottimo Paolo Benedettini, swingante sui temi più veloci (come la title track) e pronto all’assolo in quelli più ispirati alle ballad. Così come la si sente nel suono dei sassofoni di Michele Vignali o nei soli di chitarra di Marco Bovi, lontano dagli stilemi rock o country, ed invece vicino alla storia jazz dello strumento. La si sente nelle note del pianoforte di Nico Menci, più attento agli equilibri che alla prolusione protagonista. E, infine, la si sente particolarmente nella vena propulsiva della batteria di Cazzola, sempre presente, eppure anch’egli mai in cattedra.

È l’equilibrio dei gruppi veri, che suonavano assieme esaltando il virtuosismo dei singoli elementi, quello che soprattutto si apprezza in questo lavoro, che scorre con leggerezza e un sapore antico - accresciuto dal frequente uso, da parte di Vignali, del sax baritono, uno strumento oggi poco frequentato, specie in contesti swing - che rimane però fresco. Grazie, appunto, alla forza dell’affiatamento e della genuina passione per la musica, per il jazz.
