Gilbert Holmstrom New Quintet: Tiden Ar Kort!

Gilbert Holmstrom è una vera e propria leggenda della scena jazz svedese, il suo stile e la sua figura hanno influenzato molti musicisti delle generazioni successive tra cui Mats Gustafsson che ha il merito di aver contribuito alla ristampa di Waves from Albert Ayler , gran disco del 1975 licenziato con il trio denominato Mount Everest.

In questo Tiden Ar Kort!—canzone religiosa tradizionale svedese il cui titolo suona pressapoco come "Il tempo è breve"—il settantacinquenne sassofonista raduna alcuni dei nomi più in vista dell'attuale scena improvvisativa scandinava, in un incontro tra generazioni dal risultato piuttosto interessante.

Le composizioni e gli arrangiamenti di Holmstrom possiedono freschezza, groove, forza comunicativa e miscelano con inventiva strutture boppistiche e canzoni della tradizione, inni religiosi con la libertà del jazz, la placidità delle ballad con l'irrequietezza del free. La palpabile, gradevole cantabilità che permea l'intero lavoro dalla prima all'ultima nota è resa vibrante dall'interpretazione borderline dei musicisti abili nell'evitare cliché e soluzioni scontate.

I sassofoni di Jonas Kullhammar (soprattutto il baritono) si combinano magnificamente con il tenore del leader donando colori accessi e regalando robuste fiammate. D'altro canto la splendida tromba di Magnus Broo irradia onde sonore stranianti che conferiscono un percepibile livello di astrazione alle esecuzioni sostenute da una propulsione ritmica elastica e danzante.
