Joanna Pascale: Through My Eyes

Secondo disco a nome della cantante di Philadelphia Joanna Pascale, una delle vocalist emergenti della scena statunitense, questo Through My Eyes raccoglie dieci standard a cavallo tra la fine degli anni '30 e l'inizio degli anni '60, molti dei quali relativamente poco eseguiti.

Le atmosfere sono perlopiù notturne, tipicamente da Jazz Club, e la Pascale vi si muove con la più totale disinvoltura, mettendo in luce una notevole duttilità vocale che le permette di modulare tanto tonalità cangianti, quanto espressività sofisticate.

Ne emergono i suoi giovanili ascolti di Billie Holiday e Sarah Vaughan, un'attenta educazione della voce, ma anche uno studio scrupoloso del progetto che, nella sua classicità, poteva facilmente scivolare nel banale. Viceversa, i suoi partner si dimostrano non solo all'altezza del compito, ma mettono altresì in mostra anch'essi considerevoli qualità. Su tutti spicca Tim Warfield ai sassofoni, eccellente negli assoli e abilissimo nel controcanto della voce, ma anche Madison Rast, preziosissimo nell'"ingrato" ruolo del contrabbassista "puramente" ritmico (riscattato dal bell'accompagnamento nell'attacco di "Something Wonderful").

Lavoro di grande fruibilità, che si ascolta a più livelli: per la sua scorrevole e classica piacevolezza, per l'equilibrio del gruppo, per la raffinatezza dell'esecuzione e degli arrangiamenti.
