Scott Colley, Edward Simon, Brian Blade: Three Visitors
Negli anni passati i tre hanno fatto parte del quartetto di David Binney (ricordiamo Océanos e Afinidad) e svolto separate esperienze in altri contesti (Adam Rogers, Benjamin Koppel).
Appena prima della pandemia, a fine novembre 2019, il trio ha registrato questo master per l'etichetta di Michael League ma il disco è stato pubblicato tardivamente, solo qualche mese fa.
Vista la statura dei protagonisti, già Steel House era molto più di un pianoforte accompagnato ma ora l'organico mostra una chiara identità collettiva in otto composizioni originali che spaziano da brani in 3/4 con gli archi ("Nostalgia") a liberi confronti improvvisati ("The Thicket"), da ballad rarefatte ("Kintsukuroi") a episodi esplorativi ("Far Rockaway"). La relazione tra il contrabbasso profondo di Colley e il piano luminoso di Simon è uno degli aspetti attrattivi del disco, con molti temi esposti all'unisono, mentre Blade sviluppa sottili concitazioni ritmiche.
Il percorso è variopinto; non si presenta come un classico disco di piano trio e aggiunge sorprese. "You Are" inizia alternando momenti classici a ritmi concitati, presenta due lunghi assoli di contrabbasso e pianoforte, fino a raggiungere la massima tensione con il breve e magistrale intervento di Chris Potter. In "I Wanna Be With You" protagonista è Becca Stevens, che interpreta con suadente intensità il coinvolgente brano scritto con Simon e già pubblicato come singolo.
